An Unfinished Space

We started working on this unfinished basement by correcting some framing issues, and adding new framing and rough-in for a bathroom.

The staircase and mechanical room are located in the center of the basement, splitting the space into two separate small areas. Some of the vents and pipes hang low, so it was necessary to drop the ceiling in some places.

After installing drywall, it was textured and painted gray and white to match the rest of the home. Then oversized trim was installed and painted white, which combined with the new carpet completes the space with a clean, elegant look.

The Finished Space

To compensate for the lack of natural light and maintain a clean and modern look, recessed lighting was installed throughout the space, adding to the brightness of the gray and white walls and ceilings.

In the bathroom, the walls and ceiling were painted white which together with the white vanity and mirror give the small space a more open feel. The shower was built using beautiful dark blue tile that stands out against the white walls. For the floor, we chose a modern accent tile with a mix of patterns and textures that maintain the brightness of the room without making it look plain. Finally, we tied everything together by installing dark blue tile as the trim to match the shower.

To complete the room, we built custom doors to cover the crawl space access, then installed built-in shelves that are functional and hide some of the exposed plumbing. And to complement the neutral tones of the space, we used some simple but bold features such as the black matte light fixture, door handles and barndoor hardware.

The finished playroom is a functional and stylish bonus space, making it a valuable addition to this Parker home.
